York Minster York Minster is the jewel in the historical crown of York. The largest medieval building in England and the biggest cathedral north of the Alps, the Minster was built on what was the headquarters of a Roman fortress. As an example of intricate design of Gothic architecture, the Minster has dominated the city for eight centuries. The Minster is still a living church and not just a historical monument. The current building was started back in 1220 by Archbishop Thomas De Grey, but the area has been an important one in York since Roman times when the headquarters of the Roman legionary fortress of Eboracum stood on the site. This period of the Minster`s history is recorded in the Minster`s Foundations Museum which contains a number of Roman relics.
